Glossary

Terpene

Aromatic compounds that give cannabis its smell. Present in many plants; their effects in humans at cannabis doses are largely unestablished.

Terpenes are not unique to cannabis — limonene is in citrus peel, pinene in pine needles, linalool in lavender. They are responsible for aroma and are increasingly reported on lab results.

Terpene content is a more reproducible way to identify a product you liked than the strain name. That is a practical argument for paying attention to them; it is not the same as an argument that a given terpene produces a given effect.

Also written as: terpenes, terps.
