Schedule III
The federal controlled-substance schedule to which state-legal medical cannabis and FDA-approved cannabis products were moved in April 2026.
A Department of Justice order effective 23 April 2026 moved state-legal medical cannabis and FDA-approved cannabis drug products from Schedule I to Schedule III. Three related actions were published in the Federal Register on 28 April 2026.
Adult-use recreational cannabis was not included and remains Schedule I federally. Broader rescheduling remained under administrative review, with litigation filed by opponents.
